The Transmission Electron Microscopic Findings of Uteroplacental Vessels in Hypertensive Pregnancy

Abstract

Biopsy specimens were obtained under direct vision at the time of cesarean section from 2 hypertensive pregnancies complicated by fetal growth retardation, 2 hypertensive pregnancies with a normally grown fetus and 3 non-complicated pregnancies. Tissues were obtained from placental bed. The spiral arteries were examined by transmission electron microscope.
No abnormal arterial lesions were found in 3 non-complicated pregnancies. But endothelial degeneration was found in 2 hypertensive pregnancies with a normally grown fetus. In 2 hypertensive pregnancies complicated by fetal growth retardation, lipid deposition and fibrin deposition were found. In summary, we suggest that the difference between hypertensive pregnancy with fetal growth retardation and hypertensive pregnancy with normal growth might be a degree of progression of these arterial lesions.
